University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) Visits HKBU

A distinguished delegation from the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST), led by President Professor Zhu Xinyuan, visited Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) on 7 January 2026. The visit aimed to deepen the partnership between the two universities and explore strategic collaborations in student exchange, joint talent cultivation, and interdisciplinary research.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by Professor Alexander Wai, JP, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU. Joining him were other senior representatives from HKBU, including Professor Zhu Furong, Associate Dean (Research and Postgraduate Studies) of the Faculty of Science; Ms Jenny Li, Director of University Engagement; Dr LEE Wai Yi, Melanie, Director of Alumni Affairs, and Ms Cherie Chan, Senior Manager of Alumni Affairs.

Showcasing Research Excellence and Creative Innovation

The visit began with a comprehensive campus tour, showcasing HKBU’s state-of-the-art facilities. The delegation visited the Life Science Imaging Centre (LSIC), where they were introduced to the university's latest advancements in bio-medical research and imaging technology. This was followed by a visit to the White Box at Jockey Club Creative Hub, which highlighted HKBU’s unique "Art-Tech" ecosystem and its dedication to fostering innovation through the integration of technology and creative arts.

Strategic Dialogue on Interdisciplinary Synergy

During a formal meeting at Shaw Tower, Professor Alexander Wai extended a heartfelt welcome to the delegation and highlighted the significance of 2026 as a milestone year for HKBU, marking its 70th Anniversary. He shared the university's recent accomplishments, including the operational launch of Hong Kong’s first Chinese Medicine Hospital, which underscores HKBU’s leadership in health science. Professor Wai emphasised that the synergy between HKBU’s strengths in humanities and medicine and USST’s expertise in engineering, presenting a promising foundation for future collaboration in alignment with the national strategy of fostering "New Quality Productive Forces".

President Zhu Xinyuan of USST commended HKBU’s remarkable progress and growing global academic reputation. He shared USST’s achievement in the "Med-Eng" (Medical-Engineering) intersection and highlighted the immense potential for the two institutions to jointly advance talent cultivation and technology application.  He also emphasised the importance of their collaboration within the "Shanghai-Hong Kong Twin Stars" framework, aimed at driving regional and national development.

The visit concluded with a ceremonial gift exchange and a group photo session, symbolising the beginning of a new chapter in the friendship and academic partnership between HKBU and USST.
