On 24 June 2026, a delegation from the Sichuan Provincial People’s Congress and Sichuan Agricultural University (SAU) visited Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The visit aimed to deepen strategic collaboration in disciplinary education and frontier academic research, while exploring new pathways for talent cultivation and disciplinary development between the two institutions.
The delegation was led by Mr. Wang Yanfei, Party Secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group and Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Sichuan Provincial People's Congress. The delegation also included Mr. Jia Ruiyun, Member of the Leading Party Members' Group and Secretary-General of the Standing Committee of the Sichuan Provincial People's Congress; Mr. Yang Dong, Party Secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group and Chairman of the Sichuan Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese; and Professor Wu De, President of Sichuan Agricultural University. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Dr. Albert Chau, Acting President and Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) of HKBU. Other HKBU representatives in attendance included Professor Shi Jue, Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning), Professor of the Faculty of Science; Dr. Jiang Wei, Associate Dean (Special Projects) of the School of Creative Arts; Professor Regina Y. R. Chen, Head and Professor of the Department of Communication Studies at the School of Communication; and Ms. Jenny Li, Director of the University Engagement Office.
Deepening Sichuan-Hong Kong Synergy, Mapping the Future of Education
Dr. Albert Chau extended a warm welcome to the delegation. He highlighted HKBU’s commitment to responding to societal needs through interdisciplinary innovative education. He expressed his anticipation for leveraging the complementary strengths of HKBU and SAU to enhance the international standing and academic reputation of both institutions in relevant disciplines. Subsequently, Mr. Wang Yanfei and President Wu De expressed their aspirations for deepened exchange, hoping that this visit would serve as a catalyst for profound cooperation between Sichuan and Hong Kong in higher education and research. Ms. Jenny Li also shared HKBU’s recent achievements on the international stage: in the newly released Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2026 announced on the day of the visit, HKBU ascended to 68th place globally. Notably, the University secured spots in the global top 100 in all 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), with four of these goals ranking among the global top 50, marking a new milestone for the University.
Focusing on Frontier Fields, Signing the Memorandum of Understanding
During the exchange session, both sides engaged in fruitful and constructive discussions. Dr. Jiang Wei and Ms. Zhu Yuxin, Party Secretary of the College of Arts and Media at SAU, exchanged ideas on innovation and cross-disciplinary integration in arts education. Meanwhile, Professor Shi Jue and Professor Wu Hejun, Dean of the College of Science at SAU, focused on the deepening of teaching reforms and research collaboration in the sciences. Both parties reached a consensus that there is immense potential for cooperation in art media innovation and scientific research and teaching, and that they will strengthen resource complementarity to cultivate talent with global competitiveness.
A key highlight of the visit was the formal signing of the university-level Memorandum of Understanding between HKBU and SAU, witnessed by Mr. Wang Yanfei and other distinguished guests. This agreement signifies a new chapter in the partnership between Hong Kong Baptist University and Sichuan Agricultural University. Both institutions are committed to leveraging their respective disciplinary strengths to conduct closer, substantive collaboration in areas such as academic exchange, faculty and student visits, and interdisciplinary research, thereby advancing collaborative development in talent cultivation and scientific innovation.
The visit concluded with a group photo session. This visit has not only deepened mutual understanding but has also paved the way for comprehensive, long-term cooperation between the two institutions in talent development and research synergy.
