BUInsights: Exploring the future of Hong Kong’s international high-end art trading hub with Professor Janet Fong

Hong Kong ranks among the world’s top three art trading hubs️. Its tax-free policy, open market, and logistics strengths have attracted galleries and art fairs over the past two decades. The Government aims to solidify Hong Kong as a global premium art trading hub by deepening ties with Art Basel and attracting auction houses, galleries, and industry professionals.

How can we boost cultural soft power and the city’s art scene amidst this growth? In this episode of “BU Insights”, we speak with Professor Janet Fong Man Yee, Assistant Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) of HKBU. She highlights the importance of nurturing talent through platforms like the “Art Futures Awards”. This initiative, featuring jurors such as Yoshitomo Nara and Hou Hanru, connects 75 Asian universities and aims to propel Hong Kong artists globally. Expanding arts education and balancing artistic rigour with commercial appeal remain key to advancing Asia’s art scene in Hong Kong.
