The HKBU Symphony Orchestra Annual Gala Concert 2024, held on 19 and 20 April 2024, showcased a captivating fusion of Chinese and Western cultures, enhanced by cutting-edge art technology. This signature two-day event, themed "East-West Encounters", featured a diverse musical journey that blended these cultures with art tech, symbolising cultural harmony.
Under the baton of conductor Professor Johnny Poon, the 90-minute program featured iconic pieces such as the Turandot Overture and the evocative Dance of the Yao People. The highlight of the concert was the exceptional performance by renowned Violin Soloist, Jue Yao, who mesmerised the audience with the poignant Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto. Additionally, the School Choir accompanied the world premiere presentation of Lion Hill Symphonic Metamorphosis, adding a harmonious touch to the concert experience.
A special reception was held on the first day at Academic Community Hall's VIP lounge. Distinguished guests such as Wen Hua, Secretary General of Zhuhai Municipal Government; Mr. Wong Chi Cho, Joe, JP, Permanent Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism; and Mr. Liu Chun San, JP, Under Secretary for Transport and Logistics, along with representatives from the Consulate General of Finland and Consulate General of Spain, graced the event alongside the university officials.
The concert showcased exceptional performances complemented by a groundbreaking collaboration between live musicians and cutting-edge AI innovations. The integration of AI virtual dancers and interactive media elements added a modern twist to the classical repertoire, delivering an unforgettable and innovative musical experience.
